Ponified Super Mario RPG Concept Discussion

Hopefully I made you ponies think this existed. I don't think it does.

But WOULDN'T THAT BE GREAT? I've been looking for an excuse to play that game again for the 12th time without it feeling predictable.

DON'T LEAVE! I've been thinking about this for the past week and wanna just throw some concepts out there and see what you ponies think of them. You know, for fun! I don't think I'd have the time or patience to make this happen, so this is all fantasizing. But, fantasizing CONCEPTUALLY. You should have probably beaten this game for this discussion to make sense.

I love reconceptualization. That's why I like rewriting songs or planning rom hacks I never do. Just taking something pre-existing, and rewriting EVERY PART so that it makes sense under a new storyline and character set, is just tons of fun.

My ultimate dream, after playing through like 1/20th of Super Monkey RPG (a supposedly full-text-edit of SMRPG) would be to recontextualize SMRPG. Such a great game, and an already great story, with so many interwoven parts - could it be done? Seeing as how I'm on poni for the next year or so, now the current mind challenge is to rewrite this game for poni.

So, let's explore, RECONTEXTUALIZATION

Story:

So, we have the battle bt/w mario and bower for a tied up princess peach. The locale is Bowser's castle, and Smithy smashing into the castle and destroying the path there. The quest is to find princess peach, but that's a quest relayed mostly in text, it's VERY EASY to redirect the main mission of this game without visual change.

First idea:

Bowser's castle will naturally be Canterlot, and Celestia's Castle. This is a given. But what of our three first appearing characters, and their quarrel? This is a critical deduction, as all of these three characters will be playable characters by mid-game.

It is also a given, at this time, that Twilight Sparkle will be taking over Mario as the lead role. I had a brief bout of thought where it could have been Fluttershy, due to the recontextualization of Mario's Pipe House as Fluttershy's house in the woods, and it making more sense for a "jump attack". But outside of those two perks, it doesn't make too much sense, and turning the Fireball attacks into a basic magic spell would work better.

(A note - yes, Twilight would probably make a better Mallow in terms of skillset, but I don't know how that would work unless Frogificus was Celestia or some sort of teacher and Twilight was on some sort of out-of-town learning lesson. Which could also work. But as Twilight being default lead and mario being default lead, let's run with that)

Now, Bowser and Princess Peach. A fun thought would be Trixie as Bowser, thusly explaining the first fight and trixie's reluctance to accept your help. One of the draws, though, would be to have Mane 6 ponies as all 5 party members (which that's rough too, not an ideal party list but let's make it work! more challenges!)

Trying to keep the mane-5 thought in-tact, what would be the motive for the battle? Simple! A play for the court of canterlot! A mock battle, huzzah! This means all of our party members can be mane 6 friends. But then, who plays who?

We have Mallow, Geno, Bowser and Princess Peach. To be played by Applejack, Fluttershy, Rarity and Rainbow.

Fluttershy could take on Mallow, Geno, OR Princess Peach. Yes, peach is the obvious choice, as her kindness personality is great for a healer. But it's all about shapeable content and nonshapeable. Mallow could be a great choice too, as he's from the cloud kingdom and isn't aware, so too has Fluttershy Left Cloudsdale, and her heritage is quite unknown, so her return there could be scripted for Princessdom, or some other rewrite. Also, Geno is in the Woods. So Fluttershy could also be in the woods. That would be the hardest rewrite.

Let's Default Fluttershy as Princess Peach for now.

And in doing that, let's default Rainbow as Mallow, as she'd have a lot of lines in the cloud kingdom (cloudsdale) And her magic attacks could be re-sprited to look more like fantastical physical attacks.

So we have applejack and rarity to play as either bowser or geno.

Wait, can't we make Rainbow Dash Geno and give Rarity some reason for really really wanting to go to cloudsdale? I can't see rarity being either Geno or Bowser.

Go Brain Go.

Alright, Rarity is Bowser. Although Applejack being stubborn about wanting your help, and barging into the doors with you makes sense, Rarity could perhaps need your help most of all, and Bowser's chomp weapon could totally be turned into a giant ball of yarn.

It would still be such a weird recontextualization though. And then why does Applejack turn into a star and fly away at the end of the game?

The reason I haven't mentioned Pinkie Pie as of yet, is I feel she could replace about like 12 NPC's and just keep showing up in places. She would Definitely, DEFINITELY replace booster. She could also replace Croco, though maybe that'd be a role better filled by Trixie. But Pinkie could also be one of the axem rangers, and the rest could be the CMC and Pipit

Wait, why would Rarity be marching throughout equestria with a league of villains?

Ok, I'm hitting walls here, but there are some stupid starting points.

Also, local revisions:

Would the Mushroom Kingdom be Ponyville? Or would it be Canterlot, due to it's closeness to the Princess' Castle? And then would Rose Town be Ponyville? I guess that could make sense. And Mario's house would be like the observatory in Canterlot... And Ponyville would be right near the everfree forest.

There's a Strong Temptation to make Mallow as Fluttershy. The attacks would be harder to explain. But the crying, and being your first and weakest partner, makes more sense. Mallow living away from ponyville makes sense. Mallow is also a healer to some degree. Rarity could be Princess Peach, Rainbow Dash could be Bowser and Applejack could be Geno and shoot rocket apples and also turn into a cannon. God, Geno should be pinkie pie.

Ok, some good points made below, about Rarity as Peach, Fluttershy as Mallow, and not sure yet about AJ or RD as Bowser (Though I'm leaning towards AJ, due to leading herds of discorded sheep, haybale-chomp and also giant stomping robot could be giant stomping cow)

Now, RD could also be Geno, but I'm leaning towards pinkie because she is pinkie pie random. Here's why

LEGEND OF THE 7TH ELEMENT

Twilight, Rarity and -cough-Applejack-couch- are performing a classic play for the court of canterlot, when right at the daring rescue scene, Something crashes into the Castle (or stage, or whathaveyou). It is Discord, who has somehow managed to become free again and is more powerful then ever. He is operating now safely from the Chaos realm, and is being a bit less careless then last time.

Twilight talks to... Princess Celestia? (assuming she takes the place of the chancelor, which is fine as the show has proven she's generally worthless ans asks twilight to do everything for her) At the Castle (See if the Mushroom Kingdom Castle is the Castle, then Bowser's castle will have to be a stage or training ground or I have no idea). She says that the elements of harmony were scattered in the attack (oh no kiddin eh?) And that twilight will have to gather all of her friends and the elements to defeat discord (URK shit this makes lacking a character much harder to explain. Applejack can be Toad, maybe, and we'll pretend he's there for the fight. I have no idea)

So Twilight finds Fluttershy, yadayada, the first element of harmony is recovered. Rose town, Yaya yaya OK HERE'S THE FUN PART

No one knows where Pinkie Pie is. But while in Rose town, a Pony's toy Pinkie Pie is taken over by a magical spirit and walks into the woods. Twi and FS go into the woods and believe they have found pinkie. But she shoots rocket balloons from her hooves! Oh well that's just random Pinkie.

Yada yada element, yada moleville is Appleoosa, booster's tower HAHA OK MORE DISCORDED FUN

Discord gave Spike a beautiful tower of his own, and told him he could now win rarity's heart. So he's got rarity trapped and intends to marry her. Applejack (or RD whoever) is trying to bust in, but needs your help reluctantly (SHOULD BE AJ). Yada yada wedding giant cake made out of gems.

Yada yada seaside town, who becomes Johnathan Jones, no idea. Why not sitting Lyra. I still don't know, whatever, yada yada bean valley, monstro town is where all the BG ponies live.

Cloudsdale. FS returns here, this makes sense. But, a fat RD look alike is pretending to be the princess (DODO?) Or RD is Valentina. Fake RD. Or discorded RD. We're entering fuzzy territory here. Defeat them, RD has to stay in cloudsdale, Pinkie Pie is like "I'll use your element, don't ask how I just can" crisis averted? Probably not

Think about smithy's final form, it's so perfect for discord.

BUT WAIT BACKTRACK A BIT.

Strangely robotic pinkie pie says she's in the woods because she heard of a mythical seventh element of harmony. Let's take the easy way out and say it's the element of Friendship.

Now, REMEMBER how smithy has like that thing that makes robot goo for him?

That's the real pinkie pie.

He has the element of friendship, but in order to make it work, he neede a... friend. So he sort of tricked pinkie pie into it. OR SOMETHING. ALL THE ENEMIES LOOK LIKE BAKED GOODS. THIS WAS YOUR HINT. SHE BAKES ENEMIES FOR DISCORD.

Ok this is getting fun now right.

You disable pinkie, discord flips out, you defeat him, bam. Turns out the pinkie that was with you, was either, like, pinkie pie channeling her spirit into the toy, or like, celestia actually helping out, and yada yada some reason she could use the element, or you didn't need them all IDK. But we have discorded pinkie, discorded RD and discorded Spike all in one game. What more could you want?

Maybe discorded Mayor as valentina, actually. HEHEHEHE
