Back when I was like 4, my folks hated the idea of video games. We didn't have any. Until the day they caved and bought us a Gameboy pocket, and one game. And that game, was Super Mario Land 2.
So, with this one game, me and my 3 siblings played by switching off all the time. It took us months to work up beating bosses. At my age, all I ever felt like doing was the ride the bubble atop the mountain through the air which lead to the space sector. I never went after the alien, my older two brothers and sister did that. It was months until I finally went after a boss, and that boss was the rat, who I still found difficult.
So I sat there, huddled next to my older siblings and cheered them on as they went about defeating the bosses one at a time. Took us months, a year maybe. The Witch, The Octopus, the Alien, the Bird, The Rat, and the Pigs until we finally got those six golden coins. My oldest brother (second oldest in family) went after Wario, took him a day to just get through the castle, and then finally to getting to the bastard, it took every bit of concentration he had to beat him at the third stage. But he did it. And beating that game, was like we had just climbed mount Everest at that age.
So looking on this piece you've done up now. I thank you. Not only did it bring back good memories like those above, but you've also done such a faithful iteration of the cartridge art with all the spunk and lightheartedness the game had to offer.
Ha ha ha, I see this popular mod of the Game Boy classic is still popular around here. I'm amazed to see somebody take it upon themselves to actually draw a cover for it. I really like how you've stayed true to the original game's cover replacing the Mario characters with MLP characters. Well done! I'm looking forward to the coloured version!
