Another messin-around-with-grey markers thing from my sketchbook, I did this one during composition class.
It's so funny, she's talking to us and stuff, and I just whip out my friggin box of pens, start pulling out markers, and she doesn't care. I think it's because that even though I'm drawing, I still give the most input in that class.
I may have used too many dark shades, they take away from the linework, but they help the fire glow.
I agree that the shadiness around the fire makes it glow more. I probably wouldn't have recognized it as fire right away, otherwise.
