Essentially,you have to be able to have strong mental imagery. I throw down a series of short, incomplete sketch lines, sometimes just a dot or two where I think an elbow is. In the same way that we can see shapes in clouds or faces in those speccly plaster ceilings, I can begin to see what I think the image I want is, and start bringing out those lines. Because, somewhere in our brain we have a pretty good record of human anatomy.
