Legend tells that the princesses used to travel all over Equestria when they were young.

On one of their journeys they encountered an enormous dragon. It was a massive beast with teeth as big as trees, wings that could block the sun for miles and a hoard as big as a mountain. Celestia and Luna thought it was going to eat them, but it didn't.

The dragon's name was Draco. He was wise and very old, way older than any living pony. He had achieved everything a dragon could hope to achieve. And he knew that his time was going to end soon. So he decided to share his greatest treasure with those two little ponies. Not his gold or his jewels, but his knowledge. He taught them everything he knew about Equestria, the universe, magic...

The princesses wanted to make him a gift of their own to express their gratitude. No pony should ever forget about him. That's why they made him the eternal guardian of the biggest and most valuable hoard ever.
